Toffer Team frozen out of funds by Paypal for being related to “sexual services” 🥶
Toffer Team is the maker of some lovely lewd games that have been hit by Paypal freezing access to their funds. They say their account was frozen without any prior notice from Paypal.
Toffer explained via Twitter that Paypal says they are freezing Toffer’s account due to their content being related to “sexual services”:
If you want to support Toffer Team in the meantime, they have said that the most important thing you can do right now is to raise awareness about their situation on your own channels. You can also still purchase their latest game LIP! Lewd Idol Project Vol. 1 via Steam and Itch.io which would really help them out.
Unfortunately, I have heard stories just like these about Paypal randomly freezing accounts since at least 2004. What happens whenever Paypal finds “suspicious activity” in your account is that they lock you out of your money for 180 days while they “investigate”. They then deduct any fees they deem necessary for the “investigation” before they return the account to your control. As you can imagine, the fees are quite substantial.
What’s important to consider is that Paypal can freeze anyone’s funds, without prior notice, for any reason whatsoever. Paypal is not, and has no intention to be, a bank. This means that you have very little legal recourse when they lock you out of your account.
Unfortunately, you can’t really avoid using Paypal when you do business on the Internet. My advice is to only keep funds in your Paypal account that you can afford to lose. To make this actionable, you should connect an actual bank account to your Paypal that you can use to shuttle funds back and forth. If Paypal then decides to freeze your account for so-called “suspicious activity”, you only lose access to the money that was still in transit.
My advice about how to avoid getting screwed by Paypal of course comes much too late for Toffer Team, and I don’t mean to blame them for the situation that the company put them in. It’s not reasonable to expect a financial partner to screw you over like this.
All in all, this is a really bad situation for Toffer Team. I hope they are able to recover their funds within a reasonable timeframe.
