NIGHT/SHADE is a queer romantic thriller about love, sex, drugs, and murder. It is currently on Kickstarter with just over a month remaining on its campaign. I think this game looks absolutely gorgeous, promising a story with over 200,000 words, a full soundtrack, partial voice acting, and over 50 artworks by the amazing KingAsphy.

Rowan Blackwell is a hero of war-torn Rosaria, responsible for defending his lands against demonic forces. But that was seven years ago. Now he has settled down in the small hamlet of Arthdale with his wife Alexia. Nothing remarkable ever happens there, which is exactly how Rowan prefers it. 👨🌾
One day, after Rowan comes back from his usual patrols, a cloaked woman comes knocking on his door looking for help. The stranger spins a sad tale of hardship and our hero feels obligated to help out. But when he returns from this quest, he finds his town burned down and his wife captured by a duo of demonic twins.
Our hero is then conscripted into their plans for conquering the world. With Alexia being used against him as leverage and his every movement tracked with a magical amulet, will he be able to outwit the demon twins and save his world from damnation once more? Or will he succumb to his baser desires and become the powerful ruler his people so clearly crave? 😈
Seeds of Chaos is a fantasy game being developed by Venus Noire Games that uniquely blends an adult story with base management mechanics. After Rowan is captured by the demons, he is put in charge of rebuilding their demonic forces. As a player, that means you will have to make decisions about where to invest your money and which alliances you intend to keep. ⚖
As you might expect, the game's main theme revolves around domination, both in the literal and the implicit sense. You are forced to make choices that have terrible consequences for you and your people, but you are also free to just... lean into that. Seeds of Chaos features some fantastic art, with over 100 sex scenes and multiple endings to explore.

Pay off your student loans (and other fantastical feats) in Rise of the White Flower 🌼
Catherine Belrose is a magician up to her eyeballs in student loan debt. Although she graduated top of her class from the Academy of Magic, she had to loan a lot of money from the bank to afford her education. Luckily she managed to get into the Adventurer's Guild, but it's going to take her a long time to repay her debt. And she's already late for her first day on the job. 😬
On her quest to scrape the payments together, Catherine will team up with many like-minded adventurers, including six romanceable characters. Since she defines her sexual orientation as "...Yes", it's really up to you to decide who she ends up in bed with. 😋 But be careful! Not everyone wants Catherine to succeed and she's going to have to work hard to overcome the prejudices of her world.
What I think makes Rise of the White Flower great is that it gives you plenty of opportunities for role-playing. There are many choices to be made throughout the story that shape both the direction of the narrative and how you as a player view Catherine. The game is in active development, so I look forward to exploring more of the world of Valarian in future updates. 🥰

We demand they let us smooch the bat in Mask of the Rose 🦇
In a surprising announcement, Failbetter Games has dropped the news that they are developing Mask of the Rose, a romantic visual novel set in their Fallen London universe. Their previous games in the same universe include the browser-based Fallen London, the sea-faring adventure Sunless Sea, and its sky-faring sequel Sunless Skies.
We here at Up There They Love congratulate them on their first foray into the wonderful genre of romantic VNs but do wish they would leave something for the rest of us. 😉
According to the press release, Mask of the Rose takes place in 1862, mere months after London was stolen by bats. Londoners are still adjusting to life underground. The old street signs are being erased. New ministries and new festivals are being established. The mysterious Masters of the Bazaar seem to be in charge.
You share your boarding house with a few other lodgers: Archie, a medical student discovering firsthand that Death works differently here. Griselda, a close aide of the new Masters. Horatia, the landlady with a soft spot for the Neath's native inhabitants. Harjit, the local constable looking for a missing person of his own.
Mask of the Rose will offer a wholly new glimpse into the world of Fallen London, with a more personal story in which you get to explore the origins of beloved characters as well as encounter brand new mysteries.

Laying down foundations 🏗
As you may know, I also do game development myself. I’ve been working on Up There They Love by myself for more than two years, which is my space opera visual novel crossed with a crew management game.
These past two weeks I’ve been very focused on getting the visual novel aspects of my game working. I’ve integrated Ink into my game engine, which is an open-source framework for writing branching narratives, specifically designed for making visual novels.
This was actually quite tricky since the framework is written in C# and my engine is in C++. 😅
After that, I started working on rendering actor sprites by combining multiple layers into a single image. This allows me to gauge what the final result would look like when combined with the words and will help later on with estimating the costs for getting these sprites done by an actual artist.
After next week, I’ll finally be able to devote all of my time to the game’s development for three weeks, which is very exciting indeed! ✨
